Transnational Networks
Neoliberal and conservative think tanks enjoy the key advantage of long established regional and global networks, which were key to turn neoliberal ideals into harsh realities of deregulation, liberalization and privatization on the one hand, and to orchestrate a formidable opposition against progressive economic, social and climate policies around the world on the other hand.
To challenge their political influence and to promote progressive and equitable solutions to today’s pressing social problems amidst the climate crisis, we have founded the Socio-Ecological Think Tank Network (SET-Network) at the end of 2022.
Economic and Social Inequality
Societies around the world are facing unprecedented socio-economic, ecological, and democracy related challenges. Thirty years of labor market deregulation, trade liberalization and reduction of tax rates for corporations and the wealthy have driven social and economic inequality to an all-time high.
Today many European countries face levels of wealth inequality similar to those at the dawn of the first world war. Political polarizations and a rising of new right wing parties in Italy, Sweden, France, Germany or Denmark let alone Brazil, India, Australia or the United States have been a consequence.
The Ecological Crisis
The world is facing a deepening ecological crisis, which already leads to intensifying resource conflicts and makes parts of the earth uninhabitable. Scientists agree that we are at the brink of a sixth mass extinction. Efforts to mitigate these human-made crises demands a fundamental rethinking of state society relations. To keep with the Paris agreement of no more than 1.5 degrees of global warming, public authorities around the world need to engage in a broad range of policy interventions that go beyond the current neoliberal order.
Required are a substantial re-regulation of economic activities and a large-scale redistribution of wealth both within and across borders. To save the planet, it is necessary to overcome concepts such as unrestricted economic growth and the contemporary focus on economic competitiveness.
